It’s only in the last couple of years that I’ve started to eat Sushi. There never used to be many vegetarian let alone vegan options available, however with a rise in demand we’ve seen a change in menus and therefore options for us.
The Sushi Maki is a sushi restaurant in Newbury that I’ve been wanting to try for a while. It had great reviews online, so when my friend from Newbury suggested an after work catch up, I knew exactly where we should go.
About The Sushi Maki
The Sushi Maki is a Japanese restaurant in the heart of Newbury and is currently ranked as the number one place to eat in Newbury on Tripadvisor. It’s a small restaurant so it’s best to book or get there early, even during the week. We sat on high chairs by the window, which was lovely for two as you could do a bit of people watching. The Sushi Maki is a Good Food Award 2017 winner, so you can understand its rising popularity and with their beautifully presented dishes and very reasonable pricing, there is no doubt in my mind that they will expand.
What I ate at Sushi Maki
Whenever I go to a Japanese restaurant I always start with edamame beans. They are fun to eat and very tasty when covered in salt and chilli. The first time I gave these to the boyfriend he put the whole thing in his mouth...rookie move…don’t do the same!
For main I had the Crunchy Vege Uramaki Rolls. You got eight pieces which contained tempura flakes, cucumber, avocado, sesame seeds and teriyaki sauce. Originally there was mayo too, but they removed that for me as they make all their sushi to order. Fantastic! The dish came with wasabi, ginger and soya sauce.
I thoroughly enjoyed these rolls. They were beautifully made with the perfect balance of ingredients. I would order these again.
As we were still feeling a little peckish we ordered some Cucumber and Avocado Hosomaki to share. There is something about the combination of avocado, rice, nori and soya sauce that I find really comforting. Probably the most simple sushi and yet my favourite.
I can only agree with the majority that The Sushi Maki is a great Japanese restaurant. Don’t be put off by how snug the interior as the quality of the food makes you forget how close you are to your neighbour. The dishes are fresh, well presented, reasonably priced and the staff are very accommodating to dietary requirements. I couldn’t recommend this restaurant enough if you’re in the area.
