Winchester is a beautiful city in Hampshire and the unexpected home to my now favourite pie restaurant, Piecaramba.
Piecaramba is a super quirky restaurant in the heart of Winchester with comic strips painting the walls and superhero toys dotting the surfaces. It feels like you’re walking into a comic store, except there’s pie, lots of pie.
Piecaramba offers contemporary pie & mash whilst selling comic books, graphic novels and more. They have plenty of comics and books out for you to read whilst waiting for your pie. We ended up trying to find Waldo and I swear that I was much better at finding Waldo when I was a child.
What are your choices?
As a vegan you’ve got three pies to choose from
- Beet’em Up: A beetroot and black bean burger pie with melted vegan cheese and onions
- Porky Pie: Barbecue style pulled jackfruit pie with onions, garlic and paprika
- Moroccan Roll: A delicious vegan hotpot bursting with flavours of North Africa
If you choose the pie meal it comes with vegan mash potato and mushy peas for just £8.50. Who wants a pie by itself anyway, if you’re eating here then go the whole hog!
After much deliberation I choose Beet’em Up and it hit the spot. It was homely, flavoursome and warming. I’ve never been a fan of pie but Piecaramba has converted me with the mushy mint peas being a welcome surprise. I will be trying to recreate them at home.
Would I make a return visit?
There is no doubt in my mind that I’ll go back to Piecaramba. It was an unexpected delight amongst the pubs and cafes that dot Winchester centre. Next on my hit list is the Porky Pie, now who else can I bribe into a trip to Winchester so i can get my pie fix?
