Beating the munchies feat. The Food Doctor

My friends and colleagues know me as a grazer. My porridge lasts me well over an hour and i’m always the last person at the table to finish their food. Like Mary Poppins you’ll find all sorts in my handbag, but there are two things that are there without fail. A snack and a water bottle. After all, you have to be prepared for when the munchies strike.

At home I have a “goodie” cupboard where i store all my snacks. At the moment they’re filed with The Food Doctor products. The Food Doctor has plenty of vegan options, from nut mixes to muesli bars. Perfect to keep you from getting “hangry” in the afternoon at work, school, university or wherever you may be.

What’s in it?

I was really excited to try these as it’s my kind of snack given it’s lots of little bits that you can pick at. The ingredients within this mix are:

Corn, Edamame Soya Beans (27%), Broad Beans, Sunflower Oil, Oak Smoked Hebridean Seaweed (1%), Rapeseed Oil, Ground Black Pepper, Salt.

I really enjoyed this mix. It’s the perfect mid-afternoon snack as it’s high in protein and fibre. It has a nice crunch and as it is lots of little bits it makes the snack last for longer – especially if you are a grazer like me. It’s a great size pack and kept the munchies at bay until dinnertime.

Tuesday

Beetroot and Walnut Goodness Bar

What’s in it?

On their website The Food Doctor describe their Goodness Bars are being “lightly baked, crammed full of seeds, grains and dried fruit.” From the ingredients i’d say that’s true. They are:

Fructo-Oligosaccharides, Dried Apple (21%), Gluten Free Oats (12%), Beetroot Powder (8%), Water, Dried Beetroot (4%), Sunflower Seeds (4%), Chickpea Flour (4%), Chicory Inulin (2%), Walnuts (2%), Sunflower Oil, Apple Fibre (2%), Sea Salt.

Verdict

Personally this Goodness Bar was not for me. I wasn’t too keen on the beetroot flavour as it was quite overpowering. The bar looks quite small but it is very dense, so if you do like this flavour then it will definitely get rid of those hunger pangs.

Wednesday (aka hump day)

Sweet Chilli Popped Crisp Thins
What’s in them?

Soy and Corn Chips (Soy Proteins 30%, Corn Flour 23%, Wheat Flour (Gluten), Tapioca Starch, Corn Starch 3%, Sugar, Salt, Baking Soda), Thai Sweet Chilli Seasoning (Sugar, Spices (Chilli, Coriander, Ginger, Aniseed), Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Salt, Yeast Extract, Tomato Powder, Acid (Citric Acid), Molasses Powder (Molasses, Maltodextrin), Herb (Lemongrass), Spices Extracts (Paprika, Capsicum, Chilli)), Sunflower Oil, Antioxidant (Rosemary Extract).

Verdict

These were very morish. Thank god the packet was small otherwise i would have devoured them all. They’re slightly spicy, but not in a way that’s going to blow off your tastebuds! I’d be interested in trying some of their other popped crisp thins as i did really enjoy these.

Thursday (aka Friday-eve)

Sweet Potato and Pecan Goodness Bar

What’s in it?

Gluten Free Oats (20%), Rice Syrup, Fructo-Oligosaccharides, Dried Apple (13%), Sweet Potato Powder (9%), Chickpea Flour (7%), Sunflower Oil, Water, Apple Fibre (3%), Pecan Nuts (2%), Chicory Inulin (2%), Dried Sweet Potato (2%), Red Lentil Flour (2%).

Verdict

I much preferred this Goodness Bar as i found it a bit sweeter. As i said with the other bar, they may look small but they are incredibly filling so will get rid of your munchies. They’re also a great handbag size so you can chuck them in and go.

Friday

Full of Beans Protein Mix

What’s in it?

Broad Beans, Soya Beans, Black Soya Beans, Peas, Corn Kernels, Sunflower Oil, Salt, Rapeseed Oil

Verdict

I definitely saved the best until last, although in fairness i have had this mix before. I took a big bag of this mix with me to India the last time i travelled as it’s a great plane snack. My favourite beans in this mix are the broad beans. They are ridiculously morish. I may be the one who picks them all out first…but everyone has their own way of eating things, right!?

The Food Doctor has a great range of healthy snacks. This is just a small example of what they offer but you can view their full range on their website. They are the perfect travel companion or as i’ve discovered and great for beating the munchies in the afternoon.

Thanks to The Food Doctor for sending me these products to try.

Have you tried any of The Food Doctor products?
